Dear Sleek Med Spa, Here is why I deserve to win.

In 1997 my doctor diagnosed me with a large fibroid tumor. I was put on medication to stop the production of estrogen in my body. Over the next four months of treatment, I gained 60 pounds. In December of the same year, I had a 10 pound tumor surgically removed, and the medications that put me into a false menopause were stopped. My body went through a second puberty when the estrogen production was started again. I gained the normal 15 pounds with that.

Ever since this time I have fought unsuccessfully to lose weight. I ran two miles a day with no results, dieted with no results. My only hope is to have the fat surgically removed. I am not unhealthy, no cholesterol issues, no high blood pressure, EKGs are clean... etc. Unfortunately I am not in a financial position to do so. My last employer bounced 14 pay checks to me. which caused a sever drain on my savings account.

I am a performer and as I am sure you are aware, my appearance can make or break my career. I also am a huge social networker, and would be willing to document every step of the procedures both on my sites as well as allow you to use it for your own marketing.

You asked me to tell you why I deserve this prize, I am above all a good and giving person, I have recently gone through some very rough times, but I still try to remain positive. I know things will get better. I hold that knowledge deep in my heart and that helps me get through the rough times. I really could use a pick me up. This makeover would literally change my life. I could physically be the person I know I have always been inside before all the meds. I think that there are a lot of people who like me had just accepted their fate. I had to have the surgery, it's just a side effect I need to learn to live with. The fact that the make over would so dramatically change my life would inspire others to have the same thing done.

Some days you wake up an you know you have something that you have to do. I woke up this morning and had to write this post.

So many time it’s easy for us to sit back and make excuses. What we don’t think about though is that all the excuses we make lead us nowhere.

How many times have you said I really need to do something, but I’ll just do this first. Odds are the thing you know that you really need to do doesn’t get done.

Many of you know that I have started selling Avon, and that since May of last year I have essentially been unemployed. At first I had no real worries. I had been unemployed before and had always found a job. After about 8 months of knowing I had always found a job, I realized that I also had never been unemployed this long before. It was time to take a different course of action, so in addition to sending literally thousands of resumes, I am now selling Avon.

The reason I bring this up is that in order to make Avon work I have to take action. It is one of the reasons that I am writing this post. There have been many days I have thought maybe I should wait until…. I get my name tag, I will look more professional. Maybe I should wait until after I order this week, after all there are only a few days left to gather orders so it’s better that I wait so people will have longer to look at the books… Maybe I should wait it might rain today…Maybe I should wait, my blisters still haven’t healed from last time. You know what I don’t ever find myself saying maybe if I don’t pay my bills this month my creditors will let me slide. It’s pretty much a given that if I don’t pay they will cut me off, the bank will foreclose on my home, and I will be left with nothing. When you have something you want to accomplish, you can't just sit an wait for it to happen.

IN ORDER TO SUCCEED YOU MUST START BY DOING!

I have new customers each and every campaign, why? Not because I said maybe tomorrow, but because I said yes, today! Granted it’s easier to sit home and say maybe, but easy doesn’t help anything.

In August of 2007, I had just been dumped... yes again. I needed to have surgery on my foot, and in the same mall that they foot doctor was in there was a restaurant that did karaoke. I had not sung in years, but I wanted to go. I had foot surgery scheduled on Friday afternoon and karaoke was Friday night. I could have said "Maybe I will wait until next week" "Maybe I should practice at home first" Maybe..... I didn't say maybe. I went, and because I ignored the maybes, got invited to sing at a private club the next week, and because I went the next week, I got more confident and with in a couple months was contacted by a producer who was interested in doing a CD with me. Within 7 months I had my first CD done and it was on the market! now less than 3 years later I am looking at doing my 4th CD. I have been in the top 10 Jazz Artists in South Florida since June 2009 and this week I hit #1 and rank 1,016 in the world! (When you consider how many people there are in the world this is an AWESOME place to be)

Yet I could have listened to the maybes. I can not tell you how glad I am that I didn't. I could still be sitting on the couch saying "Maybe I could go next week". Do yourself a favor: don't wait!

Learning not to give in to the “maybes” is hard. It causes you to take action. Scary thought that you actually have the power to take control of your life. I say be BRAVE and rip out the page in your dictionary that contains the word “maybe” or “try” or the phrase ”I could if” JUST DO and you will succeed!. One of my favorite quotes is “Do or Do Not, there is no try” – Yoda

On February 18, Avon celebrity partner Zoë Saldana visited the Dominican Republic along with Bob Briddon, Group Vice President, North America Marketing, and helped deliver a generous donation of Avon products to the Dominican Republic Red Cross to aid in the Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

The trip comes a month after every North America facility held a clothing drive to collect much-needed items such as clothing, bedding, towels and personal care products for victims of the earthquake. Thousands of boxes of donations were collected and then shipped to the Dominican Republic facility which served as a staging area.

Saldana, Briddon and Maria del Carmen Sanchez, Country Manager, Avon Dominican Republic, joined Associates in delivering the donations to the Red Cross. They were greeted by a flood of press, as more than 50 media outlets met the caravan, and interviewed Saldana, del Carmen Sanchez, Briddon and Red Cross volunteers about Avon's contribution. Later in the day, Saldana posed for photos with Red Cross staff and volunteers in front of the truckloads of supplies.

Miracles really do happen

I wanted to share this with everyone - This is a true story. I know Dee and Marty personally. I worked for them at Quality Protection Screens in 1992 and we have been friends ever since. They are very wonderful people and they really deserved this miracle. Here's the e-mail I got from Dee yesterday.

Hi,

Marty was diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung cancer in 2 lymph nodes on November 30th, 2009. He has been going thru Radiation and Chemotherapy in hopes to shrink his tumor enough to have surgery with removal of his right lung. His chances were slim at the time of diagnosis. He has had a tough road, dealing with severe pneumonia, that landed him in the hospital for a week during the new year and lost about 40 pounds.

He has had a team of 4 major doctors: Pulmonary, Radiation oncologist, Chemo oncologist, Thoracic surgeon, and the blessings from all our family and friends and GOD.

Today we are overjoyed to get the report that the treatment was successful. So successful that we are told NO Surgery is needed. His CAT SCAN on Tuesday, shows NO TUMOR. Although, he will continue with 2 more weeks of radiation and chemotherapy - A truly remarkable recovery.

We cannot Thank you enough for your support and well wishes. GOD has heard our prayers.

Remembering a friend

I have been spending a lot of time in my music room this week working on getting a list of songs together. I was listening to an arrangement and I saw a poster I had bought for a friend of mine. My friend Jeannie was supposed to move in with me if she ever got well enough to travel home from CA. She had gotten sick and would not be able to live alone, and since I had a 3rd bed room I told her she was welcome to it.

She never was able to come back to the FL she loved, and passed away a couple years ago. I had hung this poster in what would have been her room and I thought I would share what it said. I know Jeannie would have loved it. She was an amazing woman and a great friend.

News flash: Wendell Potter tells Greg Palast why the insurance industry is secretly licking its chops over the Health Care bill.

Tell me where it hurts, Mr. President.

What's killing you, Barack, is what's killing us all: an evil germ called "Medical Loss Ratio."

"Medical Loss Ratio" [MLR] is the fancy term used by health insurance companies for their slice, their take-out, their pound of flesh, their gross - very gross - profit.

The "MLR" is the difference between what you pay an insurance company and what that insurer pays out to doctors, hospitals and pharmacists for your medical care.

I've totted it up from the raw stats: The "MLR," insurance companies' margins, is about to top - holy mama! - a quarter trillion dollars a year. That's $2.7 trillion over the next decade.

Until the 1990's, insurers skimmed only about a nickel on the dollar for their "service," Wendell Potter told me. Potter is the CIGNA insurance company PR man who came in from the cold to tell us about what goes down inside the health insurance gold mine. Today, Potter notes (and I've checked his accuracy), porky operators like AIG have kicked up their Loss Ratio by nearly 500 percent.

The industries' slice is growing to nearly a quarter of your insurance bill. All of it just paperwork and profiteering.

President Obama is never going to pull the insurance company piggies from a trough this big, especially when the industry has made room for Congressional snouts.

So what's the Rx? Easy: Kill the pigs and call the fire department.

The only solution to Loss Ratio piggery is to kill the pigs: eliminate health insurers from the health industry entirely.

We can't cure our ills, as our president has attempted, by attacking the problem ass-backwards. No, Mr. Obama, we don't need HEALTH INSURANCE for everyone, we need HEALTH CARE for everyone. There's a giant difference. Instead of concentrating on PAYMENT, we need to focus solely on providing the health SERVICE.

From my London days writing for The Guardian, I can tell you the British do NOT have national health insurance. They have a National Health Service.

The government builds hospitals, hires doctors and, when you need the service, you just go and get it. It's kind of like the fire department. When your house is on fire, you don't call your fire insurance company, you call THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. We care first about the service, not the payment.

The British government hires the doctors, like firemen, and Brits use them, like firemen, as they need them.

It works. My mother-in-law, a nurse, on a visit to England, was stunned at the speed, quality and absence of mad paperwork to fix her broken arm.

But, you might say, that's, that's SOCIALISM! Well, yes, it is. And I'm not afraid to use the S-word: Socialized Medicine. Just like America's Socialized Fire Departments. (Fun fact: socialized, i.e. publicly funded, fire departments were 'invented' by the revolutionary Ben Franklin.)

And Yes We Can get socialized medicine passed into law.

Really. It's simple: we sneak it in with the kids.

We can learn from Lyndon Johnson's sale of Socialist Medicare. Johnson knew that no one could argue that Granny do without a doctor. Can the "Pro-Life" Republicans now tell us that pregnant moms and children ages 0 to 3 should be denied care? Therefore, to the Medicare program for those 65-or-older, we simply add "Kiddie Care," for those from Negative 9 months through age 3.

But instead of the wallet-busting Medicare system, in which doctors and hospitals are paid for each suture, bag of blood and pat on the head, Kiddie Care will be provided by Kiddie Care Service salaried doctors.

How do we get doctors (who now AVERAGE $240,575 a year) to take well-paid, but not pig-paid, posts? We grab'm while they're young. We pay doctors the full cost of their medical education; and we treat them as humans during internship, not as in the current system where interns are treated as medi-slaves. In return for the public paying for their medical education, the public gets the young doctors' ten-year commitment to work for the health service at a reasonable salary.

That's not my invention. The free-education idea for staffing a national health service had long ago been proposed by that wily old dog Ted Kennedy. (Damn, we miss him.)

Once the first wave of three-year-olds are about to turn four and their families face having to buy them health insurance, these millions of parents will become an unstoppable army of lobbyists screaming for the extension of Kiddie Care to age four, then to age five, then to age six and so on. Get it?

Yes, Mr. Limbaugh, I am another bleeding heart trying to sneak socialized medicine into America. Yes, I am trying to rid us of the "free-market" insurers who are causing the bleeding. Health insurers are as useful to our health care system as a bicycle is useful to a goldfish.

Free-Market Fantasia

There ain't no such thing as a "free market" in medical care, as there is a free market in food. You can eat peanut butter instead of dining at Maxime's. But you can't tell the surgeon, "No thanks, I can't afford a new kidney this week - I'll just have a broken arm."

A free-market for-profit insurance system means that, when you need a new pancreas, your fate is left to an insurance company computer programmed by Franz Kafka, Dr. Kevorkian and his accountant. It's you versus the Medical Loss Ratio. Good luck.

In olden days, doctors would attach leeches to suck a patient's blood. Today, we have insurance companies' Medical Loss Ratio. Both can kill you. If Obama and America want to end this sickness in the body politic, start with Dr. Kennedy's sure-fire cure: a national health service for kids - and get rid of the bloodsuckers.

I Quit: A Personal Note

I learned of the Kiddie Care solution during my brief and ill-starred tenure at the Center for Hospital Administration Studies at the University of Chicago "Billings" Hospital. I couldn't make up that name. Years later, they hired Michelle Obama as their vice president for community affairs.

In my time, three decades ago, "Billings" handled the affairs of that poor community by shipping the uninsured, sometimes bleeding, to poor-folks hospitals. One wounded patient died on the poverty shuttle.

I quit, and swore that one day I'd write about it. I just did.

For those of you who don't know Second Life (SL) is a virtual world where people create avatars and in create a second life. In this world we design things and build things and create art. Businesses are created that result in real life(RL) dollars. I became involved in Second Life as a way to promote my music - which has worked very well. I have had several "jobs", and recently have started designing clothing and have opened a clothing store.

One of the biggest problems - other than the fact that Linden Labs (creators of SL) are completely incompetent neanderthals who when they try to fix one thing break 429 more and lacks an ounce of customer service skills - is content theft. This is when someone has created something and another person makes a copy of it and sells it as their own. One of the biggest offenders is AnneJoy Paine, owner of aDiva Couture.

Below is an excerpt from Nicky Ree's blog detailing this theft:

I have received various enquiries about my troubles with aDiva. Before I have mostly kept this between friends and fellow designers, though some made it to blogs read by many more people. Why am I writing about this now? I realized many people didn't know or realize aDiva's history of copying and using works without permission from original creators and were promoting Annejoy Paine and stolen items without knowing what they were getting into. I therefore decided to try to write something about my experiences. Perhaps this blog entry will help.

First of all I would like to make it clear. I DO NOT resell my illustrated clothing TGA files for use to anyone. If anyone says they bought my illustrated clothing TGA files as template, those TGA files are illegally obtained, perhaps ripped and stolen using software that are used to steal textures.

Second, when I first approached Annejoy Paine about the textures, she claimed then to me and said in some blogs, that she drew it, no mention of buying it from someone else. But I have examined the items and many of my fellow peers have also examined the items and they are pixel for pixel exact for the shading and highlights and cut. This can only be so if you have my illustrated TGA files as a master base. This leads me to believe that Annejoy Paine has been using illegal ripped copies of my illustrated textures.

Now if you get inspired by someone's else designs but you drew it 100% or created it from a blank canvas, then I am not too concern about it. But to use TGA illustrated texture files from other creator's illustration without the original content creator's permission is not right, to copy designs 100% from another designer is not right or even use a certain software to copy prim for prim work by other designers is not right.

In addition, recently there has been an increase in the illegal copying of designs in Second Life. Many designers are facing the similar situation of their work being copied without their permission. I wanted to outline the measures we designers have to follow when we file a DMCA notification to Linden Lab. The current procedure with Linden Lab is not ideal but it is one we have to work with for now. Hopefully it can be improved. This is a hard situation for everyone. On the 4th October 2007 I was vacationing in Germany and I logged in with my laptop to check on the usual emails and to catch up on some reading on the fashion blog feed. I saw a fashion blog featuring clothing by aDiva (Annejoy Paine). It looked very much like my work. I logged onto Second Life and visited her store. I was totally shocked to see alot of my work used without my permission. I informed my friends and fellow designers to visit the store to check if their works were also being used and sadly I wasn't the only person whose designs had been copied.

I was shocked, hurt and very upset. I sent a message to Annejoy Paine, the operator of aDiva, to try to talk to her and she denied doing anything wrong. Several days later, after returning from my holiday, I sent a more formal notecard to Annejoy Paine and to her manager Pia Loon. In the notecard, I asked her to cease and desist and gave her some days to respond. But I got no response from them at all. I then decided to send a DMCA notification to Linden Lab.

The DMCA has a procedure for asking the operators of a server (Linden Lab in our case) to take away content that you believe are infringing on your copyrights. In the case of Linden Lab, you send a fax to them with a DMCA notification. In it you say that you believe someone is infringing on your copyright, and you spell out where you believe the infringing content is (the vendors in the stores), asking them to take it down. Linden Lab responds by closing the vendors. The other party has the opportunity to respond with a counter-notification in case they believe the notification is not legitimate.

Between the time of discovery and while I was preparing my DMCA
notification many things happened:

- other designers whose work was infringed upon as well approached landowners where aDiva had stores. They pointed out that AnneJoy Paine had been copying content. As a result, many landowners kicked aDiva out of their land. At that time I approached one land owner to find out more about what can be done to stop aDiva from selling items using part of my work and they decided to close her store after giving Annejoy Paine a period of time to respond to their questions.

- more information was sent to me about new locations where aDiva had vendors selling work based on my textures. I went to check on all the locations given to me to make sure I had all the facts and details necessary for my DMCA notification.

- I finished my DMCA notification to Linden Lab. I send my first DMCA notification to Linden Lab on 16th Oct 2007 and on the 17th Oct 2007(more locations found) by fax.

After several days of waiting Linden Lab responded on 19th Oct 2007 saying that they could not act upon my DMCA due to the fact that some of the locations listed were not found (landowners had kicked aDiva out).

So I had to recheck all the locations again and added several new ones and resent my DMCA notification again on 26th Oct 2007 and again on 28th Oct 2007 as I found more store locations by aDiva selling items with parts of my work without permission.

After waiting several days I had no response from Linden Lab. I emailed and called direct to Linden Lab help lines several times. Unfortunately this was not very helpful, so I started to attend events where I knew a Linden would be around and asked questions about this.

Finally I resent my DMCA notification on the 4th Nov 2007 with references to earlier DMCA notifications sent. On the 7th of Nov 2007 I received an email from Linden Lab that after reviewing my notification and in compliance with the DMCA the works listed in the locations stated in the DMCA were removed or disabled.

Now during the period of time from my first discovery and to the final outcome of the DMCA procedure people started getting involved defending AnneJoy Paine. They implied that I was on a witch hunt against her. They believed her to be honest and did not copy or steal my work. Now I can understand that it can be harder for someone else to recognize the clues and details that are easy to recognize to me, as these are my own designs and I am an experienced designer. AnneJoy Paine sometimes combined various pieces of different textures into one design, and would also change them some. Some of this would be more obvious than in other cases. Later on she started to smudge and blend what I believe are my textures very heavily.

It is important for people to understand that I am just a single person, like many designers in Second Life. I operate my business myself: I work on my creative work and also run my day to day business in Second Life, attending to numerous customers enquiries. So I am not a giant company with lots of staff and workers running errands and doing things for me. It is not a case of a giant company against a small one. It takes quite a lot of my time to check and file DMCA notifications, and it is not easy either. Seeing my own hard work used this way without my permission makes me sad and affects me a lot.

Meanwhile I tried my best to get back to creative work and managed to continue designing and producing new items for my business, putting aside occasional sadness and distraction that came with the trouble I had with the whole aDiva affair.

Then this year on 19th january 2008 the whole thing exploded again when Annejoy Paine was promoted in a major fashion event. I then decided to check on the items that Annejoy Paine had in her present stores and to my shock I found items using my work again.

Once again I prepared and filed my DMCA notification on 2 items and faxed it to Linden Lab on the 23rd Jan 2008. After quite a few days wait, Linden Lab responded to that DMCA notification saying they couldn't act on it. This was because some vendors had changed by then, and I had unfortunately made a typo describing one of the many locations in my notification. It is quite hard to get this right! So I updated my DMCA notification and resent it on the 29th Jan 2008.

On 1st Feb 2008 I received an email from Linden Lab saying they reviewed my notification and with compliance with the DMCA the items listed in the locations on the notification were expeditiously removed or disabled.

A note to aspiring designers, if you have the skills use them but use them wisely. Create your own true work and do not steal from others or use parts of their work without their permission. Frankly, if Annejoy Paine used her own skills to create just her original work and didn't continue to use and take works by other designers without permission, smudging and patching parts here and there, I think she will fare much better as she has the basic skills which can be worked further and improve given time. But her method of obtaining short cuts from other designer's work without their permission is not right and should stop.

Sorry Anonymous, but I was Annejoy Paine's manageress ... in fact I was the person that first took her seriously and gave her a shop.

During my time working with her she mentioned several times of her tools to rip textures etc from other peoples items ... and these tools have been demonstatrated to my by scripters who have worked with many top names to stop those in SL like Annejoy Paine who steal content.

I even have a friend who wanted a Nonna Hedges top not as a jacket but as a shirt layer .. Annejoy volunteered immedatley to do this and the IDENTICAL Nonna Hedges top came back .. except .. it had Annejoy Paine's name on it as creator. This top is STILL in existence I can assure you - physical proof of Annejoys texture ripping and design fraud.

When I became aware of this fraud, I separated ways with Annejoy and at that time she changed her brand name DIVA to what it is now called .. ADIVA.

I am sorry - I was there at the beginning .. and even at the beginning she was copying ... I refuse to work with such people. There are many admirable scripters and other individuals working for the good of content designers in SL .. dedicating time to stopping these thieves. I applaud these individuals, just as I applaud the people blessed with the energy to use there own imaginations to create ... not those who take the easy option to steal and then claim credit for designs that are not theres [sic].

AnneJoy's abuse in SL does not stop there - She is constantly rude to customers. She actually will punish you (or attempt to) if you do not stop and say hello to her - The irony here is that she is ALWAYS too busy to be bothered with talking to you. I believe it is because she is too busy trying to find designers that have not banned her from their sims. Many have. Many will ban anyone who has mention of aDiva in their profile. This has happened to a very good friend of mine. The only transgression on her part was joining aDiva. For many in Second Life that is more than enough reason to ban someone. The possibility of losing a customer is outweighed by the possibility of having their hard work stolen.

I was thinking about writing You for a while, actually since I heard You did closed all the ModelGroups and with this You kicked out the Models who was working for You.
You may say now that this is none of My business and I could agree BUT I do not. It is My business and any other Model in Sl too, when I see a Shop Owner treats Us Models so badly and dont even see it or not wanted to see it. Many of those Models You kicked out WITHOUT a warning did worked their sexy butts off for You, even as You treated them worse they still were there and worked hard to, trying hard to satisfying You. You did treat them badly by kicking them out without any warning and/ or any chance to get a new job BEFORE they are without work. I for Myself did quit the job at Your store for a couple of months already because I saw it coming. You don’t even paid the Models in Lindens but expected from them to work their sexy butts off not even acknowledge that real life always comes first Annejoy.
Many of those Models were a very good employee, nice, sexy, friendly, funny, correct and loyal. And You did kicked them with Your feet…You cant demand something from ppl that YOU are not willing to give by Yourself Annejoy. Yes, I was a model at aDiva, for almost a year. I am not revengeful and making up lies. I am sharing this info only because CONTENT THEFT IS WRONG! Personally, I will not be shopping at aDiva again I have left her groups (even though she charges L$250 to join - All other reputable business people in SL let you join for free - alleging that the money will go to charity, though to date not one cent has been donated. Perhaps she forgot to mention the charity it will go to is called aDiva Couture. To me that sounds an awful lot like fraud - but I only have a Master's degree in Law so I could be wrong). Let me make this clear, I am not asking anyone not to shop there or to drop the groups. I am just providing you info to allow you to make an educated decision. I am removing any of her stolen content from my SL closet. For me, it's bad karma to keep it.

Second Life: An inventory Fix - I hope

Trying this out now, but Tapika Tomsen from Lemania Indigo Designs shared this with us earlier today. Thought I would post it to all:

When my inventory died and I couldn't get it to load. This advice from Syler Morgwain helped.

Log out and reopen SL.
Hold down "CTL+Shift+G".
A drop down menu will open.
The list will have many things to choose from.
Agni is the main grid, it is the grid we are on now.
Aditi is the beta grid.
Select Aditi and log in.
Go into busy mode, as soon as you log in.
Do NOT im anyone.
Do NOT chat.
Do NOT TP anywhere.
Just stand there and open your inventory.
Type something in the inventory search space so that your inventory begins to load.
Let your inventory fetch all items.
The process may take a while.
Once your inventory has completely loaded, log out of the beta grid and back into the main "Agni" grid.
When you are back on the main grid open your inventory and let it load. The items should come back.

*Oh, when you are on the beta grid you'll notice an influx of lindens. This is fake money. You can not transfer it to the main grid. If you feel the need to transfer some lindens, send all your moneys to "RENEE LOWENHART". Just Kidding... It wont work. I tried.*

I did not notice an influx of Lindens - I saw my lindens decrease while on this grid, but the opposite of what is supposed to happen is typical for me. I also noticed that I had a TLE tag on when I landed - Not to happy to have anyone even the few people on this grid think I may be associated with them - I have nothing to do with anyone at TLE other than receiving threatening e-mails from their personnel, which promptly get reported for harassment. (rolls eyes) I seemed to be stuck at 58,853 items so I logged out. I relogged and it got a few more items loaded immediately.

Will update with what I find, but regardless I have more inventory than before :)

Getting ready for the October 3K

I was talking to my friend "She Who Must Not Be Named" (YES we are Harry Potter Fans, NO she is not evil) about the training we go to and the runs. I told her I will be completely happy if I am the last runner to cross the finish line. She looked at me like I was crazy. SWMNBN is currently working towards improving her speed, as she admittedly is very competitive.

At our Wednesday night training, there are people of all ages and levels. Many of the group are high school runners. SWMNBN is often disheartened by not being at the level of the others. While I can understand this, I try to explain to her that the only one there that she needs to compete with is herself.

If I am the very last person who crosses the finish line, and I have done the ABSOLUTE best that I could do, I have won. To me as long as you give you all and make your very best attempt, you are a complete and total success.

That's just what I feel. What do you think?

Just a note: The first few workouts were not calibrated properly - I walked/ran 2 miles it recorded .38 (rolls eyes) I think it was created by a man - I am walking a minimum of 2 miles a day this week. My focus is on keeping my foot going in the right direction. The 20 car accidents in 17 years damaged the muscle that holds my hip in place, but I am working through it :) Starting on Wednesday I am doing my normal AM routine and adding another mile in the evenings. My route covers 2-3 hills depending on the path I take. It is definitely a good thing :)

I watched Michael Jackson's funeral today. I balled. I know some people would be embarrassed by that, but I think it makes me human. I was touched by Brooke Sheilds and Usher's portions of the tributes. Sheilds spoke with love and warmth. I had forgotten that they had dated. It was nice to see Michael's children without veils and masks, though it must have been a very long and emotionally draining day for them. Paris showed amazing poise when she spoke at the end.

I truly hope that the children will heal and that as Martin Bashir said this is the start of their path to a life of normalcy.

Five Tragic Days

The week of June 23 was incredibly tragic in the entertainment world, Never in my life have I ever seen so many entertainers pass in such a short amount of time. Icons of my childhood dropped like flies - It was a very sad time, but from that sadness I had the strength to finally say goodbye to part of my past that I wasn't able to before. So I now sit before my keyboard, free for the first time in 17 years needing to pay homage to those who's deaths gave me life.

On June 23, we lost Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson sidekick, Host of Star Search, Co-host of TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes and The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, and actor. Recent press around Mr. McMahon focused on his financial woes, which mirrored those of many Americans. Donald Trump bought McMahon's home and leased it back to him to fend off foreclosure. McMahon, born in Detroit, but raised in Lowell, MA began his career as a bingo caller at age 15. During World War II, McMahon was a fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps serving as a flight instructor and test pilot. He was a decorated pilot (six Air Medals) and was discharged in 1946, remaining in the reserves.

For more than 30 years America welcomed a familiar Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer's Johnny into their homes. He will forever be an American Icon.

Two days later we we lost America's Girl Next Door and Angel Farrah Fawcett. Farrah lost a three year battle to cancer. Her greatest legacy is not her year on Charlie's Angels as Jill, her award winning work on The Burning Bed, or Extremities, her commercials or pin-up posters. It is a story she told without lights make-up or wardrobe, where she stood naked before the cameras as Farrah Fawcett, Cancer victim in Farrah's Story. He we saw for the first time what this woman we had watched so many times on the stage and screen had inside her. She bravely and strongly faced cancer, and on May 14th shared her story with the world. He story was as inspirational as it was sad, and on that evening many of us said our goodbyes to this beautiful legend. Farrah remained with us for six more weeks finally succombing to the cancer on June 25. Long-time love of her life Ryan O'Neal was at her side as she passed.

She is survived by one son with O'Neal, Redmond.

Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia detailing her cancer and it's treatments.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, and began treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery. Four months later, on her 60th birthday, the Associated Press wire service reported that Fawcett was, at that point, cancer free.

Less than four months later, in May 2007, Fawcett brought a small digital video camera to document a doctor's office visit. There, she was told a malignant polyp was found in the area where she had been treated for the initial cancer. Doctors contemplated whether to implant a radiation seeder (which differs from conventional radiation and is used to treat other types of cancer). Fawcett's U.S. doctors told her that she would require a colostomy. Instead, Fawcett traveled to Germany for treatments described variously in the press as "holistic", "aggressive", and "alternative". There, Dr. Ursula Jacob prescribed a treatment including surgery to remove the anal tumor, and a course of perfusion and embolization for her liver cancer by Doctors Claus Kiehling and Thomas Vogl in Germany, and chemotherapy back in Fawcett's home town of Los Angeles. Although initially the tumors were regressing, their reappearance a few months later necessitated a new course, this time including laser ablation therapy and chemoembolization. Aided by friend Alana Stewart, Fawcett documented her battle with the disease.

In early April 2009, Fawcett, back in the United States, was rushed to a hospital, reportedly unconscious and in critical condition. Subsequent reports, however, indicated that the severity of her condition was not as dire as first reported. On April 6, the Associated Press reported that her cancer had metastasized to her liver. Fawcett had learned of this development in May 2007 and her subsequent treatments in Germany had targeted this as well. The report denied that she was unconscious, and explained that the reason for Fawcett's hospitalization was not her cancer but a painful abdominal hematoma that had been the result of a minor procedure, according to the Los Angeles cancer specialist treating Fawcett, Dr. Lawrence Piro. Her spokesperson emphasized she was not "at death's door", adding "She remains in good spirits with her usual sense of humor ... She's been in great shape her whole life and has an incredible resolve and an incredible resilience." Three days later, on April 9, Fawcett was released from the hospital, picked up by longtime companion O'Neal, and, according to her doctor, was "walking and in great spirits and looking forward to celebrating Easter at home."

A month later, on May 7, Fawcett was reported as being critically ill, with Ryan O'N eal quoted as saying that she now spends her days at home, on an IV, often asleep. The Los Angeles Times reported that Fawcett was in the last stages of her cancer and had the chance to see her son Redmond in April 2009, although shackled and under supervision, as he was then incarcerated, Fawcett seemed not to notice. Her 91-year-old father, James Fawcett, flew out to Los Angeles to visit.

Her doctor, Lawrence Piro, and Fawcett's friend and Angels co-star Kate Jackson—a breast cancer survivor—appeared together on The Today Show dispelling tabloid-fueled rumors, including the suggestions that Fawcett had ever been in a coma, had ever reached 86 pounds, and had ever given up her fight against the disease or lost the will to live. Jackson decried such fabrications, saying they "really do hurt a human being and a person like Farrah". Piro recalled when it became necessary for Fawcett to undergo treatments that would cause her to lose her hair, acknowledging that "Farrah probably has the most famous hair in the world", but acknowledged that it is not a trivial matter for any cancer patient, whose hair "affects [one's] whole sense of who [they] are". Of the documentary, Jackson averred that Fawcett "didn't do this to show that 'she' is unique, she did it to show that we are all unique ... (T)his was ... meant to be a gift to others to help and inspire them."

The two-hour documentary Farrah's Story, which was filmed by Fawcett and friend Alana Stewart, aired on NBC on May 15, 2009. The documentary was watched by nearly 9 million people in its premiere airing and it was re-aired on the broadcast network's cable stations MSNBC, Bravo and Oxygen.

In June, O'Neal asked Fawcett to marry him. She accepted his proposal and O'Neal said the wedding would happen "as soon as she can say yes." The two never married.

May we always treasure the gift of Farrah's Story and the life of this legend.

A little more than five hours after we lost Farrah, people around the world were shocked at the death of the King Of Pop - Michael Jackson. Today July 7th the world will say farewell to a man who like few before him changed the face of music forever. Michael Jackson's superstardom began at the age of six as a member of The Jackson 5. He endured an abusive life as a child. I am opting not to use the word childhood, because that has a connotation of happy times, something I believe Michael never experienced. I believe he spent his life trying to find that lost part of his life, as many of those of us raised in abusive homes do. Michael's fame and fortune allowed him to attempt to recreate his childhood in ways that we would never have envisioned.

Neverland Ranch was Michael Jackson's home - It was every child's dream home living in an amusement park. The sprawling estate has many of the key elements you find at all great amusement parks. Michael in his need to fix his own childhood years, opened the gates of Neverland to thousands of children every year. Some people say it was a tool he used to lure children to him so he could abuse them, but I do not believe that. I believe Michael Jackson was a tortured individual, a musical genius who would have given everything he had if he could have relived his younger days happy and care free. Do I think the allegations about michael were true? No. I think that on a personal level Michael function ed on the level of a teenager. I think that was the only way he could deal with who he was. I believe that sadly he was not comfortable in his own skin, and that is an incredibly sad life to live. Yes Michael Jackson was different, but in all fairness, which one of us wouldn't be?

Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his Heal the World Foundation, charity singles, and support of 39 charities. He was on of the few artists ever inducted twice in to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. He is listed numerous times in the Guiness World Book of World Records, his career lasted over four decades, and he barely five. With all the claims to fame he had, his most treasured was his children.

Another two days pass and Josephine Owaissa Cottle better known as Gale Storm, passed away at a convelescent center in California on June 27. Storm was best known as a star in two popular television programs of the 1950s, My Little Margie and The Gale Storm Show.

After My Little Margie ended its 126 episode run Storm, a lyric soprano took to the stage. On her website she wrote: " It has been such a joy and a blessing to have performed on stage as the lead in such fine shows as Unsinkable Molly Brown , South Pacific , Finnegan's Rainbow , Wildcat, Cactus Flower, Plaza Suite, Forty Carats, Lovers and Other Strangers, Affairs Of State, Rainy Day in Newark, No Hard Feelings and Grand Prize." Her first record, "I Hear You Knockin'", a cover version of a rhythm and blues hit by Smiley Lewis, in turn based on the old Buddy Bolden standard "The Bucket's Got a Hole In It", sold over a million copies. It was followed in 1957 by the haunting ballad, "Dark Moon" that went to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Storm had several top ten songs and headlined in Las Vegas and appeared in numerous stage plays.

Storm was married and widowed twice. Her first marriage was to actor Lee Bonnell, with whom she had four children: Peter, Philip, Paul and Susanna. Bonnell died in 1987. In 1988, Storm married Paul Masterson. Masterson died in 1996.

RIP Ms. Storm - Thanks for all the laughs and music.

The next day, June 28 we lost Fred Travalena at age 66. His obituary in the Los Angeles Times highlighted his many talents. "'The Man of a Thousand Faces' could voice Bugs Bunny as well as Luciano Pavarotti. Travalena, a Vegas performer, talk-show regular and star of his own specials, died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma."

The boyish-faced entertainer is said to have had a repertoire of more than 360 celebrity, political and cartoon-character voices, including Clint Eastwood, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, Henry Kissinger, Donald Rumsfeld, Johnny Mathis, Bruce Springsteen and Luciano Pavarotti.

In one part of his act, Travalena physically and vocally "morphed" into all of the U.S. presidents, from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.

He also was known to sing "Have I Told You Lately" in various voices, including Kermit the Frog ("Have I told you lately that I love you"), Katharine Hepburn ("Have I told you there's no one else above you") and Frank Sinatra ("You fill my heart with gladness . . . ") I remember seeing Travalena on Merv Griffin, ABC Comedy Hour and slightly eerily in he appeared in the series premiere of the short-lived 1991 sitcom Good Sports with Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett.

Also lost on June 28 was famed pitchman, Billy Mays. His son announced his father's death via twitter. The day before his passing Mays was on a flight landing in Tampa that had a particularly hard landing. Stowed luggage from the over-head compartment fell on Mays, causing speculation that his cause of death was similar to that of Natasha Richardson. Mays, like Ed McMahon, began his career on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It was his voice and his over-the-top promotion that brought Mays his fame as America's Pitchman.

He traveled across the United States for 12 years, selling various items before he was hired to sell OxiClean and other products on the Home Shopping Network. His success as a TV pitchman led him to found Mays Promotions, Inc. On April 15, 2009, the Discovery Channel began airing PitchMen, a documentary series that featured Mays. On the morning of June 28, 2009, Mays' second wife, Deborah, found him dead in his home.

The pallbearers at Mays' funeral wore his trademark blue oxford and kakhi pants. A pitchman til the end, according to KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, he was reportedly buried wearing a shirt with the OxiClean logo on it.

So there we have it - In less than a week, five days to be exact, we lost 6 people who made a mark on our lives.

My thoughts are with the families of those who remain, may the music, laughter and smiles they brought to our lives somehow bring solace to yours.

Disney fans pay tribute to monorail driver Austin Wuennenberg by getting #Austin into Twitter trending topics

Fans of Walt Disney World's parks and resorts are a passionate bunch, so Sunday's monorail accident that killed 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg of Kissimmee was particularly emotional for fans.

And in recent months, Disney fanatics have also taken to micro-blogging site Twitter, where they share tips about visiting a park or post pictures.

So to commemorate Wuennenberg's life, a group of Disney fans created the Twitter hashtag #Austin and told others to include it in their tweets. Their goal was to get the term into Twitter's trending topics, which is a realtime reflection of the most popular words and phrases people are putting in their Twitter messages.

The effort appears to have begun on Sunday afternoon, with this tweet from @DisneyFrankness, a Twitter user named Frank from Missouri.

Monorail Crash at Disney

On 7/5/9 at 2:00am tragedy struck the the Happiest Place on Earth. A fatal Monorail crash took the life of Cast Member & Pilot Austin Wuennenberg, 21. Austin was a computer Science Major at Stetson University, Class of 2010, and a graduate of Celebration High School..

Below is a link that will provide the story as well as videos on Austin (pictured on the monorail) and on the crash itself. There is also raw footage of the incident immediately after it happened.

The Story

The sites right now are going crazy with blaming this and that for the tragedy, but one simple fact remains. No amount of blame will give this family back its son. I am certain that Disney will take all steps necessary in the investigation to find the actual cause of the problem. I am as secure riding on the monorail today as I was the last time I was at Disney. Millions of people a year are transported via the Monorail system. 4 incidents and only one fatality (please do not think I am down-playing Austin Wuennenberg's death. It is a tragic loss) in 38 years is an amazing record. I wish our planes, trains and automobiles had as good a safety record.

While I do not think that the cast members at the TTC handled the situation in an appropriate manner, As a Specialist in Emergency Management Planning, as well as a Disney Shareholder, there are several things I saw in the raw footage that could have been done better. I do not fault Disney for this accident, nor do I feel that the actions of all around after the accident (yes, this also includes the guests - particularly the one who had nothing better to do but shoot footage most likely in the hopes of obtaining his 15 minutes of fame) would have done much to change the outcome of this scenario. This was after all exactly that - A very tragic accident.

On Twitter we have started a Memorial to Austin all tweets contain the #Austin. If you tweet please add it in his memory - We are working to get him listed as a trending topic.

I would like to add this note: While I feel great sadness at the loss of this young life, I am more deeply saddened by the lack of actions of those around. I know that in the midst of unexpected tragedy, people are in shock, but when you can do nothing more than stand there and video tape the scene there is something more tragically wrong with you. This is a disheartening statement on society today.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and co-workers. We need to worry not about blaming but about healing.

Where is the Love?

A friend of mine on Twitter posted the following quote and asked me my thoughts on:

What has happened to music? Music used to show love and devotion, but know it preaches hate and stupidity ~ Kamanda Ndama (via @teamarete)

Music has always evoked emotions, love, happiness, sadness. It is a wonderful way to share and feel emotions. Music has also always been a reflection of society.

In the 30's songs like "We're In The Money", "High Hopes" and "Ain't We Got Fun" were popular as they brightened hopes and helped people deal with the Great Depression. In the 40's War themes were popular as we were involved in WWII. The 50's were a time of change and the birth of Rock-n-Roll. Protest songs were popular in the 60's. In the 70's music began branching out in many different directions. Groups like Abba, The Carpenters, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who... It was a time of change we were still protesting war but also finding ourselves as a society. Regardless of the situation, none of the music was about hate.

It is a sad statement of today's society that music is preaching hatred. We need happy music, music that brings people together, not tear us apart. Music used to calm he savage beast - Now it seems that it creates the savage beast.

When I reflect on it, that's why I sing mostly older songs. I mean what I sing - all the songs I choose have some reference to my life. I don't have time or energy to focus on or preach hatred and stupidity. Hope you don't either.

HI There

Yup I am jumping on the blogging bandwagon - Twitter is doing great for me (Kudos to www.martiniinthemorning.com for the heads up on that one) so I figured that I'd try doing the blog too. I was just watching Good Morning America - Saw this piece about letting your body find its weight.

Fat Acceptance: 'Young, Fat and Fabulous' Say No to Yo-Yo Diets

I am thinking that's a great movement - It makes so much sense. Historically, not being paper thing was a sign of affluence. Marilyn Monroe, one of the sexiest women ever was a size 14! Your body knows what it is supposed to be. Ever since the 60's and Twiggy we have been fighting an endless battle of the bulge. I am by no means saying that we can sit on the couch eating ice cream all day and getting to 800 pounds. We need to live healthy, active lifestyles and if you're 200 pounds, you're 200 pounds. Our bodies know what we are supposed to be WAY more than we do. Regardless we will all NEVER be Twiggy... Isn't that what makes us interesting though.

In the end... Be happy Be Active and Be Healthy - Eat a balanced diet - Be happy with YOU - no matter what size or shape. You are awesome just as you are!
